CHAPTER 1

How to Get the Most from this Book

Recognizing Your Potential

For the purposes of this book, a spirit companion is more than a spirit guide or a spirit friend. While technically each of these could be considered companions, the term “spirit companion” was created with a specific dynamic in mind. Simply put, a spirit companion (SC) is a spirit who enjoys an intimate personal relationship with a human partner. The manner of spirit is not limited to any single category or type — it could be an angel or discarnate human, an infernal spirit (also called “demons”), an elemental (sylph, undine, et al), or any of a number of other types. A spirit companion often has a guiding role, but this is not required to fit the label as it was created.

I coined the term “spirit companion” in 1999 while corresponding to author Donald Tyson (see bibliography). The term gained wider use over the years, particularly online, until now when it has found its way into wide use, and in some surprising areas. A quick search brings up an article by Raven Grimassi, a gamer article on EverQuest II, and a sculpture by Michael Anthony Ricker, all in the top ten returns on Google. I have even seen it on at least one Christian site in recent months.

This book will focus on two main objectives. One: gaining and strengthening contact with a spirit companion, which will be useful for any type of human-spirit relationship or interaction, including spirit guides, with only minor modifications. Two: taking your relationship to its fullest potential, which moves into advanced work including daily exercises, analysis of lessons, and ordeal work.

In this chapter, I’ll provide a brief summary of what you’ll learn in detail later. Some of this material will describe my experiences, but later you will discover your own, which may differ. There is a wealth of information in this book, and I strongly urge you to read, take notes, and compare to your own experiences, but suggest you avoid skipping ahead. You may miss information that forms the foundation for later exercises.

Throughout the book I’ll be using the female pronouns to refer to the human partner and the male pronouns to refer to the spirit companion, though this is not intended to imply limitations on the people, spirits, or orientations involved in your personal situation. It’s simply for ease of reading (and writing!).

While I intend to keep this book accessible to everyone, I shall begin by assuming that you had a reason beyond curiosity for picking it up. I don’t need to ask you why you want to know about spirits or if your need is worth the risk. The only risk intrinsic to this pursuit it self-deception, and you can deceive yourself every day without involving any woo-woo stuff. This is not a “Magick 101” book, but instead assumes you have, if not direct experience with spirit contact, then at least the intellectual capacity to apply the information in the described ways and to the topic at hand. I will include quick-and-dirty introductions to concepts that beginners may be unfamiliar with, along with a suggested reading list (see Appendix X) for finding further information on those conceptions.

In bullet form, here’s a rundown of the material we’ll be covering in the forthcoming chapters:

  • The Subtle Senses — Corresponding with our five physical senses, we each have astral or subtle senses. You’ll learn about these, as well as what can interfere with them, in Chapter 2.

  • Learning to Perceive — Using the subtle senses is easier than you think, but it does require practice. You’ll learn ways to do that in Chapter 3.

  • Finding a Spirit Companion — In Chapter 4, you’ll learn simple ways to attract and contact a spirit companion that is right for you, including tips on trance and meditation, dream contact, and more.

  • Types of Spirits — Chapter 5 covers many commonly contacted types of spirits and how each of them differ from the others.

  • Methods of Strengthening Contact — In Chapter 6, you’ll find specific exercises geared toward strengthening the bond with your spirit companion, and therefore your contact. It also offers information on channeling, talking boards, and other work.

  • Helpful Concepts — Chapter 7 describes (and, in some cases, debunks) common concepts surrounding spirits, and tells you what you can expect during the changes wrought by a relationship with one. It discusses evolution and afterlife concepts — what happens after death, and why we have a choice.

  • What’s in it for the Spirit? — For those who’ve wondered why a spirit would choose to work with you (or someone you know), Chapter 8 has potential answers.

  • Meeting Meridjet — Chapter 9 takes a look at Meridjet, my spirit companion, and how he has changed my life. This will shed light on what you can expect with your own companion.

  • Doubt and Evidence — Doubt is hell, and evidence is heaven. Chapter 10 tells you how to deal with doubt, and how to weigh the evidence.

  • Getting to Work — Chapter 11 moves into more advanced work, a must for anyone who wants to utilize this unique relationship for spiritual growth. A spirit companion can aid healing, stimulate Kundalini, and take you to places of pure bliss.

  • Sex — It’s easier than you think. Chapter 12 has the low-down.

  • Potential Problems — Chapter 13 tells you how to get rid of unwanted spirits, and describes some of the more common problems human beings face in SC relationships.

  • The Metaphysical Universe and the Subtle Realms — You can use your newly-trained subtle senses for more than perceiving spirits on the material plane. Chapter 14 discusses the subtle planes, and why those are already familiar to you.

  • Phasewalking — Chapter 15 describes a method of astral projection that anyone can do. I call is phasewalking.

  • Applications for Magick — It’s only fair to aid the spirit a little in return. Chapter 16 gives a variety of choices with which to honor your SC, and describes how to use magical tools to aid your link to the spirit and to provide him with a straightforward means of confirming messages that you may doubt.

  • Meridjet Speaks — In Chapter 17, Meridjet provides answers to questions submitted to him by various people over the years. This is channeled material.
